O.K., for all you “we gotta’ do something people” there will be a Hill Country Fun Run the 26th of this month for all of you not going to the valley. Ricky Crow has volunteered to make available to us the mapped out course that was run in February, 2003. It was an all day event (approx. 300 mi) that ran though the Hill Country and was “spirited” to say the least! There were several rest stops and a stop for a Dutch lunch.  This is not a sanctioned SASCA event, but rather a group of people who would like to make a little fun run out of the city. Ricky produced an extremely well laid out course complete with a map and detailed driving instructions and all who made it had a blast!

So mark your calendars and let me know if you intend to make the run with us. Start time and location will follow.  We had about 20 cars last time so let’s see if we can meet or exceed that number this year!
Donations to the LB/WNANT* Fund will be graciously accepted.

This is an important notice to those of you who like to exceed the speed limit and/or push your cars too hard.  We do not sanction, insure, or accept responsiblility for any harm taht comes to you or your car during these fun runs.  Also, if you get pulled over, don't mention SASCA to the 5-0.  With that being said, these events are a BLAST!  Mike and I had fun at the last one playing tag up and down the hill country in two under-powered cars.  You can't beat that top down feeling.  You guys enjoy this.  I don't think I'll make it [:-censored], because that's my B-day, but we'll see.

Aww, c'mon Wil!!  You can still be back home plenty early!!!

And like Mike Allen said -- the pace will be 'spirited' but not dangerous by any means.  Just like the TSBA says, ride your own ride, don't try to keep up with anybody beyond your abilities or try to impress anybody.  As the lead car, I will be staying within a safe margin of the speed limit.  Because of the 'slingshot' effect of cars in the back going slower and faster for various reasons, it seems that the cars in the back always end up hitting some of the more insane triple digit speeds (I've been in the back of one run, and have video of my speedometer at 135mph and other video of me reading out speeds as high as 143mph when I was in my M3).  Needless to say, you will have a blast no matter the speed you drive on this run.  If you want to stay closer to a legal speed, stay up near the front of the pack.  If you want to just 'see what happens' then stay towards the back.

Just my $.02.

O.K. Wil, I was not in an "underpowered" car. I was trying to go slow enough so you wouldn't feel alone!  [Cheesy] YellowDog will be there this year with full power and better suspension (not to mention a better driver), so we'll see!!!

Let the smack off the track begin.

Compared to the Lightning and the C5 we were in between, we were both underpowered.  And besides, I was still in front.  [Cheesy]

Oh man, gotta bring the G35 to have some fun in!  300 miles, man thats gonna be a tiring long fun drive!

I agree with everyone here.  A long time ago I went on a drive like this in a older car, and was trying to hang with miatas.  LEts just say the tail end of my car came out in one turn and through me into a 180, but I caught it and was able to regain control and continue on, but that was one hell of a ride.  This car can easily out handle my old one, so who says I can't hang with the miatas now. Tongue

Anyways, keep us posted guys, I will definitely try to make it to this one!

There's one section of Hwy 337 that I have us planned to go on that I don't really expect *anybody* to keep up with me, unless that person is Phil Weber or they are on R-compounds.  :-)

I will have my fun, but we will always wait and regroup any time we turn from one road to another.  Nobody will have to worry about getting lost out there in the middle of nowhere.

Also, one of the most fundamental rules I have when we go on these group runs... Don't *ever* pass in the twisties.  Also, don't EVER cross over the yellow line when going around tight corners.  If you are crossing the yellow line then you are pushing too hard and are being a hazard to others on the road as well as others running in the group with you.  There are a ton of sport bikes that like to ride on these roads we will be on and their machines are much less forgiving when a surprise comes around the corner at them than our cars.  Be sure to show some respect and courtesy when we're out there.  Most of all, be careful.  When I've lead these group runs, the worst that has ever happened was somebody in a Sonoma slid into a reflector because he didn't realize we were pulling off to the side of the road to wait for people.  Accidents like that can happen anywhere -- I don't want to see anybody get any body damage (either to car or person) out there.

Lest we forget there was also a Z06 in that bunch.  Wil as I recall your black Miata sprang a leak.  Maybe got scared [:-scared] [:-shake] of the yellow dog and wet its oil pan. [:-slaphappy]

I will also attest to the slightly insane speeds that can be reached if you are in the back but even when I got in the middle of the pack I still had a blast.

Ricky does a fine job of keeping these "outings" relatively trouble free but it is up to the individuals to know their limits.  Also, as an addition to Ricky's points about the yellow line, try to keep all wheels on the paved surface as debris from "agriculture excursions" can become extremely infuriating to the people following you.

I won't be able to make this one as I will be battling the Z's down in South Padre but I will send a donation as soon as I talk to Penny.

im SOOO terribly tempted to try this in the dynasty, but frankly i dont know how to drive it anymore..   im almost scared of it now.. with the suspension stuff i put on it, anytime i try and push a turn on the streets i almost always end up close to going off the INSIDE of the turn..  not the outside as i was used to, hahah.  i really think i should do the steep part of the learning curve in a parking lot as opposed to between a line of trees and fences..  so i might take the avenger.. nice and sloppy with the new tires [:-banghead], more what im used to.  sadly that car is a lot slower than a miata, dont want to get in anyone's way [B)]

when you say 300 miles, are we talking into and out of town, or just the 'main event' so to speak?  cuz 300 miles of hard driving and then mroe to get there and back is a little crazy, lol.

When he says 300 miles.. We're talking total, from start of the day, to the end of the day (from our starting point of Bandera & 1604).

And no, I was NOT leading the one where Conrad spun his CRX.  I, luckily, didn't even attend that run.  I heard about the airborne NSX and RX-7...  I've also witnessed airborne S2000's on other runs.  I prefer to keep all of my tires on the ground.

As for what car to bring -- bring something that will be the most comfortable to drive and that you are the most comfortable driving.  You don't need a fast car to keep up with us.

That was Phil.  I was bringing up the rear in the Vette right behind Conrad but I only saw the big cloud of dirt he made.  I guess he missed those big yellow -> -> -> -> ->signs!
