As discussed in another topic (Renting Texas World Speedway Part II), the PCA events in the Valley make a great venue for getting the "experience" required by Texas World Speedway before going out on their track.  Plus it's a lot better deal, price-wise.  In the above mentioned topic, it was noted that an upcoming 2-day event is scheduled for the end of this month at TWS.  The price?  $250 for both days.  1 track layout.

This upcoming PCA event is a 2-day event also, but 2 track layouts (adds more fun to the mix).  And all for $80!!!  (Just register early..)  So the drive is about 2 hours longer, the price difference alone pays for the extra gas and your hotel room!

Ask anybody that went to the last 2-day'er in May.  We had a blast!  Even John will admit he had some fun most of the first day! [8D]

I'll get to my point...we all like to have this kind of opportunity available to us.  Big open tracks at a reasonable cost for track time.  The more people that show up to this kind of event, the more people find out about them and in turn attend these events.  Hopefully, this will open the eyes of other possible venues (Cabaniss in Corpus??) for us to run on.  You never know, the possibilities are there.

Ok, so maybe I don't have much to do in the office this morning.  But Rene and his people put on a damn good event for everyone.  And with no events planned for this month and next, this makes the perfect opportunity to get your "fix" during the down time.  It all just makes sense...

Lots of fun.  Still on the fence about going to this one.  I just need to see if I can fit it into my schedule.

Sounds like you had quite a week-end. Tell us a little more about the car you ran, TR4, Solex carbs?

Quite a weekend is a bit of an understatement:

I was blackflagged.  [^]  I didn't let some guy in Porsche pass. Couldn't see him. He was in my blind spot.

Spun out twice in a row on turn 3 during first session.

Spun in front of the wife and car owner at turn 1. (shifted into 2nd gear and hit wet spot at same time and spun BEFORE the turn!)

Missed two gates on my second timed run.."Gates? I don't need no stinkin' Gates!"

Hey, I ended up 2nd in my Class!  Beat my brother by, I think, 5 seconds. Missed first by not too much. Not bad for an old man who hadn't done even an autocross in 25 years or so!

The TR was bought by myself when I was 19. Been an SCCA race car since it was built in factory and raced SCCA all those years.  Brother has had it since about 73. Updated, upgraded. Full race cam, SUs, aluminum flywheel etc.  Original body, head, trans/OD, LSD rear end.
Last raced in 86. Been stored and for past two years he's rebuilt it.

Wow, now that's a sports car. These young guys who don't even know what a SU jet wrench is! I'd love to see it sometime.
If you have any pictures of the car and it's history they would be a welcome addition to the photo albums.

As everyone has said so will I......Great event and tons of fun.  Was it worth the 3600 miles round trip?  Absolutely....and I would do it again.  Also, thank you Rene and RGV PCA for the plague...you guys are a class act and I will not forget this anytime soon.

The M held together nicely and actually got through an event without breaking an endlink this time.  Brake rotors are shot but hell I wanted an excuse to change them to a track rotor anyway.  Michelin Pilot Sports held up great for the practices and the R's did great for the timed sessions....thanks Rene.

The caravan worked out well and I appreciate everyone making John Simms feel welcome.  Hopefully I can convince him to start autocrossing but I have to admit auto-x is a tough sell compared to full out roadracing.  As for the tow speeds...let's just say no one was complaining [Cheesy] .

As for the rumble in the valley between Z's and M car? Let's just say it ran a 1.19.318 which was the fourth quickest closed wheel and fifth quickest with XO figured in.  Not bad for a 3800# four wheeled computer. [:-bigeyes]  Guys I had a blast ..... thanks for everything.   BTW, I have pictures and some movies of Robert, Ryan, JohnB and Ed so PM me with a good email address so that I can get them to you.

Well lets add that Mike lucked out when the rain stopped the event on Sunday. I wasn't that far behind him on Saturday and as his brakes were shot and mine were just starting to get bedded in, I could have caught him. Wink  And all this stuff about breaking motors in ...., Well I guess I broke mine in driving the car onto the trailer Friday! Wink

3800 pounds? What are they feeding you up there in Virginia? Last time I checked an M3 weighs 3400 pounds, you must be eating well to get the weight of the car up to 3800 [:-devil]

Sorry Mike, couldn't resist (again). [:-angel]

3400# empty with no water, fuel or oil and cloth interior.  Once you add one semi-famous racecar driver (Me 230#) [Cheesy], gas, oil, water, leather interior with moonroof and enough airbags to fully enclose all seats.  Then you get very close to 3800# or at least that's what I saw on the corner weight scales.  Good thing I had all 333 ponies to keep my fat butt rolling.  Although, I am having sinister thoughts of gutting the car and really see what she is capable of.[:-bigeyes2]

John, I hope you can make it. Is your car back together? Just remember there is some risk in what we do. Its part of the deal accidents happen. A friend of ours that ran with us before has gone on to Spec Miata & last year he had a similar incident. Except he lost control of his car & put his Spec. Miata into the wall at TWS. It took safety crews 45 min to cut him out of the car of course the car was totaled. He is fine & he is out there back at it again.

On to our safety record at Cameron County. We have been running events since 2001 & this was the 1st DE we have had with any bent sheet metal. There are no obstacles like a wall or guard rail like the real tracks up north. All in all if someone was to start there 1st  DE here this is as safe a place as any of not more so to start out at.

I recently ran a DE at TMS in Fort Worth. There is no run off on that track! If you goof you’re going into a wall a tire barrier or a guard rail. As a matter of fact the front chicane is made up of 3 bundles of 16 tires each. It was kissed a few times that weekend. As well as the tire barrier coming into the infield.

John I hope we can get you down here again so you can enjoy a full trouble free weekend of high speed driving. If you are willing to join us in September I will waive your entry fee. I don’t want there to be any ill will towards our events because of your incident at the last event.

Rene,

No disrespect intended.  I know your club does it's best.  My  car is running/racing again, the important parts have been straightened out.  I need new piston rings, but that isn't critical right now - the wife retired last month so we are adjusting to a 1 paycheck lifestyle, so the offer is much appreciated.  I will come if it is at all possible because as I said, your events are a blast!  And getting out of  SA for the weekend and down south for some coastal lifestyle is a  much needed change of pace for me.

Okay folks, Penny and I have talked and it looks like the M3 will be making a guest appearance at this event.  Haven't thought out the logistics entirely but I plan on being there.

Robert,  I need you to acquire some of that fancy tape you had at the event we attended cause the stuff I brought $ucked.

Oh BTW  JohnB, would love to see how your monster stacks against the M in its native environment.

Race ckecklist:
200 Gallons of Diesel [:-bigeyes]
4 new tires (yeah I know Gerno) [:-banghead]
1 trailer
1600 miles and 1 week of a Bull$h1t conference then 2 days of heaven [:-angel]

Ok then Mike.  If this is a call out, you have me motivated!  As a result, motor is coming out this weekend for rings, a head and block notching (big valves will smack the cylinder walls) !

I still probably won't keep up with the BMW on the long straights but try not to slow me down if your in front going into the twisties!
