I'm hopefully buying an 84 GTI today.

The suspension is probably in need of replacement.
What can I get away with to stay in HS with it?

Would adding some Weber Carbs bump it out?  Strut Braces and such?

Okay, I found this link:
http://www.sff.net/people/dburkhead/prepcompare.htm

According to that I'm allowed a catback, aftermarket bushings, and 2 setting shock absorbers.

This GTI is rare and does have AC, can I delete it?
Is removal of the rear seat and all paneling permissible?

Aftermarket bushings actually aren't allowed in stock class...  Unless there is an exception based on age that I am not aware of?  You can't delete the A/C in stock class, unless it was a dealer-installed option on your vehicle.

You can do the following:
- Brakes -- Any pads that fit in the stock calipers are allowed.  You must keep OEM or OE-replacement brake rotors, though.  On cars over a certain age, you can replace the brake lines with stainless steel braided lines, I believe.  You may want to confirm in the rulebook, as it has been a long time since I had a car that I was concerned about the brake feel.
- Exhaust -- you can do anything you want *after* the catalytic convertor.  The header, downpipe, catalytic converter, etc, all need to be stock.
- Air intake -- you can ONLY replace the air filter itself with a different replacement filter element such as a K&N OE replacement.  You cannot modify the airbox or intake plumbing.
- Front sway bar can be replaced
- Shocks -- up to two adjustments are permitted (i.e. separate compression and rebound adjustments).  Stock springs must be retained, and the distance between the center of the lower bolt hole and lower spring perch must remain the same as stock, thereby keeping the ride height stock).
- Wheels... Any wheel can be used, as long as it is the same width, diameter, and within a 1/2" of the same offset as stock.

Those are the big ones...  The full rules can be found here: http://www.scca.com/documents/2011%20Tech/2011%20SCCA%20Solo%20Rules.pdf

Thank you, Ricky.

Looks like I'll target the Street Prepared class with this car.

I did actually buy it.

Here's the Skinny:

1984 GTI 8v
148,000 Miles.
1 owner, stack of receipts from all service.

Paid $1350 and he's delivering it on his flat bed tonight.
Muahahaha!

Nice car,  owned one back in '86 or something for a time, it's a lot of fun. If I remember to bring it Sunday I have an old shop manual and a book on VW performance mods. Shoot me a PM on Saturday to remind me.

Sounds great.
I haven't been able to locate a Chilton for it in town.
I was prepping to just buy it off the net.

It runs well enough.  But I've been battling what are hopefully minor over heating issues.  (car is literally a barn find)
(and breaking bolt heads in the process Roll Eyes )

I'll send you that PM!  Thanks in advance!

Nice find!  You can have a blast with that car whichever direction you decide to go with it.  I would check the history of the number of people that stay in what classes, as I'm sure you want to run against someone, not just solo each month.  I look forward to seeing what direction you go!

Chilton sucks for old VW's, look for a Bosch repair manual, much more detailed and informational since Bosch did the majority of the electronics. I have a classic Poor Richards (look it up) it's a bit beat up but it's almost as good as a Bosch and much better than a Chiltons. If you can stop laughing long enough to work on the car it has great illustrations and information.

Luckily everything on that car is easy to work on and understand, so you shouldn't have a hard time with it. Oh and cheap too, you can cross most parts with other VW's of that era so junk yards are a lot of fun.

The first major safety item, is to replace the seats.

There is a bar that jams your ribcage on right turns.

Functionality wise, I'm still chasing that OT issue.
I found no thermostat was installed, put one in.  Now my fan doesn't come on.

It takes about 10 minutes of idle to get Hot.  But then its only 1 bar from the red.
I'm taking it to Freds shop tomorrow.  I'm having him upgrade all the bushing and motor mounts..

After that I'll start sinking money into performance enhancements.
