As some of you know, 2nd gear in my trans went kaplooie on friday.
I have almost everything I need to do the rebuild myself, except a decent sized press for the bearings and gears.
The main input shaft is 21.5" long, so I need a press that has at least +25" of work space.
Anybody have one I could borrow for a few days?
Or let me use for a handful of hours to press bits off and back on?

Oh, and I intend to buy one if need be, but If anybody might also be willing to lend me a torque wrench that can go up to 195lbs, that would save me a few more $$$ on an already expensive repair.

Cheers
Shane.

I dont have a press, Shane. Maybe you can walk into a shop and have someone press on assembly. If you need some names of shops that might be able to help, let me know, and I will see what I can come up with.

Thanks John.
I've managed to gain access to a press.  Smiley
But, Now I need to just commit to doing the job myself, or sending the parts to a "Qualified" shop to be fixed.
It's a surprisingly hard question for me to answer.
Save $700 and risk doing it wrong.
Spend an extra $700 and get a warranty.
D'Oh!
I'm actually leaning to having it done by AndrewTech Automotive in MD.

Shane, I have a 300 lb torque wrench you can borrow if needed. If you have the shop manual on tranny and the proper tools then I would probably try to re-assemble the box. You may need a dial indicator and a good shim selection to get the clearances set up correctly.

Thanks again John.
I managed to save myself a bit of money, and a lot of work. Smiley
I found a used, but rebuilt with stronger internals, trans that'll bolt right in.  Got it for a fair price.
I do have the FSM, but it turns out swapping in stronger gears is not as cut-and-dry in my model-year as it is in the newer WRX/STi models.  Thanks Subaru for changing things up just enough to make it hard!!
Now at least, heaven forbid I bust something in this newer trans, all the strange "conversion" head aches is done.  It'd be an easy pull/press to fix it.
