Couple Questions.

Hi,
I saw all of you at Blossom this last Sunday. And am going to try and join for the next event in Sept. I of course have the which class is my car in question. But have a few others as well.
I currently have a 1993 Nissan 240SX with the SR20DET swap. As well as a bunch of other mods.
I have looked at the SCCA classes and believe I would be in the SM (Street Modified) Class. However, I am not sure. So my first question is...
1. Is there a catch all class that will take any car? To be honest I dont care about times and/or placing but only want to get more seat time. Will I be put in a class if I am not sure on my class?
2. What is involved in the tech inspection? I did not see the requirements listed anywhere. Is that always done the morning of the event or can you have it inspected beforehand?
3. About how many runs can I expect on average?
4. Are there any noise restrictions at Blossom?
Thanks
Mike

Mike,
Tech inspection is always done the morning of the event ... unless you can get the Tech Inspector to issue you an Annual Tech sticker which lets you do your own tech inspections. All you have to do is become a SASCA member, then demonstrate to the tech guy a thorough knowledge/understanding of the safety features to look for.
There's a tab for novice info on the left side of the home page that you might want to look over. Tech inspection is also covered in the SCCA rules book.
Welcome to the club.

Tech inspector will check wheel bearings to see if they are loose or not by rocking tire/wheel, check for throttle return to be sure gas pedal/throttle butteryfly returns to idle position, and they will check battery tie-downs to see if battery is secure, and they probably will check brake pedal pressure to see if brakes are mushy or not. Years ago we use to do a 'hands off' the steering wheel brake test to see if car would stop in a straight line. Passenger compartment and trunck must be free of any loose items. There is also a noise restriction at Blossom and I think its 94 dB but I dont recall at what distance sound levels are measured. In other words, you will need a muffler.
We usually suggest that the spare tire and jack be removed from trunk. Of course, seat belts must be installed and used, and you will need a helmet that meets snell rating, I am guessing either a 2000 or 2005. Most clubs do have loaner helmets you can borrow.
Most events will have a minimum of three or four runs, depending on turnout. And you may get as many as six runs in a day. You can check results of past events to see how many runs were given and you can also check your class to see what your competition is running. Keep in mind that an index factor or 'Pax' results will show your overall position for the day. This index factor is based on SCCA classes.

As for classing, SM sounds right to me and XP is the "catch all" class you were asking about. I recommend staying in SM myself unless you like the idea of going against the LS1 Miata or supercharged Lotus Elise that show up occasionally.
Either way you'll have the time of your life

SASCA does not require a Snell rated helmet, a DOT will do fine. If you decide to compete in events other than SASCA's I would suggest going for a Snell rated though.

Thanks for the replies.
Sounds like the tech inspection is a quick safety inspection. Ive got a helmet and gear etc. I do mainly DE events with a different car. Which would not pass the sound restrictions. But since Blossom is like 10 minutes from my house I just dont think I can resist dusting off the 240 and bring it out for the day.

If you have some sort of muffler on a turbo car there's a good chance that it's quiet enough. That's assuming that you don't have a VTA wastegate, at which point it's iffy.

Dalton should update the text/procedure on that and it should be pinned, or not. Up to Dalton.

At one point a description of the tech process/goals was available from a tab on the home page but now I don't find it. I'll research the SCCA stuff and post info on how to find it. I'll get something up soon.

To get a good understanding of the Technical Inspection process and its goals, go to
http://www.scca.com/documents/Solo_Rules/2010
Read: SECTION 3.3 VEHICLE SAFETY, in its entirety. If after reading it, you still have questions, you can
1. Post them here.
2. PM me.
3. Email me. <

4. Call me (512)619-7583.
5. Approach me at a club meeting (First wednesday of the month,7:30 at EZ's at 281 and Bitters).
6. Approach me at an event after Tech has closed, preferably while I'm walking the course.
