H2R, you had me at "... a blind, random asteroid field ...."

"Gymkhana is a gymnastic test of your driving skills and your car's
abilities. It's not so much about speed--imagine stunt driver (you)
meets daily driver (your car) in a series of challenging events
requiring quick thinking, lots of sudden, simultaneous control inputs
and a cool-headed command of situational awareness.
From a standing start to test your best launch through a carve versus
slide 180, down to an either or, inside or outside line snap decision,
through a 360 degree pivot, then an optional slalom followed by a
high-speed lane change and a blind, random asteroid field of
mini-cones. Don't hit those, but a must-topple, late apex murder cone
follows, and a downhill, limited adhesion garage parking maneuver
requires a full stop, then select reverse and back uphill 100 yards
through a coned gate, stop, relaunch, around a gate, miss the garage
and take your checkered flag.
Sound easy? Think again. Fun and challenging is the name of the game
and by the last run of the day, you and your car will have a closer
personal relationship. Guaranteed.
Cost is $40 for members and $50 for non-members.

Steven Johnson was asking for corner workers for this event just 2 days ago.  Not sure if he still needs more.  If any of you would like to help, contact Eric Beverding :-)

Too weird not to try.  I'm doomed of course.  I have trouble remembering even a simple autocross course.

I don't understand the concept "select reverse."

I cant do this, the msm tranny has 2 modes.
First is puree, to ensure the reverse gear is easy to go into.
Then there is reverse. But you can't skip the first mode

I like the shirt!  Funny but unfortunately for me, not true.  I think someone who is good at autox AND drift would be pretty good at gymkhana.  It is so so hard to de-program the auto countersteer function.

Really glad you signed up.  That tire shredding low end mega torque will pay off and be fun to watch!

I don't understand the concept "select reverse."
Hey, you have plenty of time to design, fabricate, install and test a reverse mechanism for the Legends car!  I'm thinking it would only take 40-100 hours to do.  Did you see the GRM Berzerkeley reverse setup?

Hey, don't dis the six speeds!  I've got 190k+ on mine and it goes in reverse (take that Dalton!).  I don't understand, your trans grinds going into reverse no matter what?  Did it do it before your fancy clutch/pp/flywheel combo was installed?   Adjust pedal throw, bleed system, fix mechanical throw, change clutch/pp/flywheel, pump clutch, hit 2nd/3rd first while double clutching, alter shift speed, fresh synthetic or just spin the car and put it in reverse while the car is rolling backwards and rev match.  Simple!

FYI, if miata people want a ten cent handbrake 'spin knob':
-slide the handbrake grip/cover off of the handbrake lever.
-drop a dime into the grip/cover so it blocks of the hole for the release button.
-slide it all the way back until the dime fully depresses the handbrake release button.

disclaimer: this mod is to be used only in a blah, blah, etc.

The GRM Berzerkely reversing mechanism had the tax deductable budget of a national magazine, the technical support of a professional machining outfit capable of fabricating gears, consulting from a long time rules-stretcher and it STILL didn't finish it's first run. It was probably the Harbor Freight tools used to assemble it.

The average homeless person can afford a national magazine these days. Maybe since Rush Limbaugh can't buy a football team he can sponsor your Legends car. I'm trying to come up with a blow hard joke but it's just not coming to me.

I need to be quiet since I'm woosing out on this event. Embarrassed

My apologies for this post, I have no idea what I meant to say or mean at the time. It was a bad day and some pinhead pissed me off with a Rush reference. Usually I ignore them but it was just one of those "I can't believe you really think he speaks the truth" type things and it spilled into this post.

Anyway I swear, I'll have a few beers before I post from now on.

I don't know how tom's car is  or if the regular 6speed has the same bad luck. But msm tranny have 50% chance of suck, I debated going to a nice 5sp but 2nd would end at 78mph or so with the 3.63

Yea, I have a 50% chance of getting reverse in the first try. It feels like it goes in but when letting out the clutch..nothing. It increases to 75% if I have a cup in the cup holder. I had the same issues with my Scirocco when I replaced the 4 speed with a 5 speed, the shift pattern was just a bit too narrow, reverse which was down and to the left of 2nd and 5th which was up and to the right of third were always tougher than the rest to get in. VW back then just added a 5th gear to a 4speed tranny instead of redesigning it. It worked well in cars designed for 5 speeds but not for ones like the Scirocco that were originally designed for a 4 sp. Most of it was linkage issues though, they just modified the already sloppy linkage slightly to accommodate the extra gear.

I'm not sure if that's the same with the Miata 5sp to 6 sp though.

From Eric:

Be here at 8:00am or so. Gates will probably open *just* before then, so I wouldn't hurry to get here early.

Drivers' meeting is at 8:30am.

The event runs from 9am-1pm. If we fill up (which I doubt), we'll get six runs each. If it's less than full, it'll probably be more.

No lunch break since it ends at 1pm. Bring a lunch, or a snack if you don't wanna wait for lunch.

Passengers are welcome as long as they're over 18, sign the waiver, and wear a helmet.

And yup, it's rain or shine. Depending on how much rain we get tonight and tomorrow, it'll either be sunny and dry on Saturday, or their may be just a couple of places with some water.

Luckily for this event, water hazards make it just as fun. Smiley
