SASCA's new host venue , the AT&T center, is requiring that Proof Of
Insurance (POI) must be on file for all drivers BEFORE any future
autocross events at the AT&T center.   This is in addition to our club's
standard event insurance and waiver forms.

We need to collect copies of each drivers POI BEFORE the next event.
This is the insurance card that you hand to the nice officer along with
your driver’s license.  It should be in your glove box or wallet.

If we don’t get your POI on file BEFORE the October 22nd event, you
might not be able to run.  We realize this is not ideal,  but for now, this
is part of the price of doing business with AT&T. If you tow your car,
send in the POI for your tow vehicle.  This requirement is for Drivers
only, spectators do not need to have POI on file.  We will need a new
copy when the POI expires, not one for each event.

Here are some ways you can get your POI on file with us.

1)  Get out your digital camera.  Photograph your POI card and email it to me.
If you have a scanner that would work also.

2)  Mail me an extra copy or a photocopy of your POI card.

Emails should go to   sasca@swbell.net

Postal mail should go to

Will AT&T allow us to hold the 22nd event without a year long contract?  I ask this because I fear that we'll find that we turn away a lot of folks and even more just wont show up.  I'd really hate to get locked into a year at a place where we only get less than 50 entrants and have a hard time making ends meet.

This will cripple the novice class.  How many first timers will send you thier POI before they even try this sport out?  And without new blood coming in, we're gonna be hurting in a few years as we loose our veterans.

Maybe I'm just being Chicken Little here but I don't like this at all.

1)  Does this mean that we wont be able to have any walk up racers?  I fear that this will take a HUGE chunk out of the novice class.  I just can't see a first timer emailing you thier POI before an event.

Not to mention Spokes also runs at the same time on the 22nd at San Antonio Raceway, I imagine people are gonna be pretty scattered that day.

How many people do we get to pre-register? I would imagine that will be the most POI we will get for the events. I agree with Kevin I think we'll lose money on our events without walk ups.

I dont think this is a big deal. Other clubs and organisations require preregistration and proof of insurance. The only issue as I see it is getting the word out. Maybe the web guys could put a large banner on the front page? With a year long contract we have our dates laid out well in advance in time for people to get ready for them.

You're dealing with a big corporation with a big legal staff.  They will be unlikely to budge on their contract requirements. Perhaps they are already trying to discourage you from this deal.

I agree on this. Sounds to me instead of saying no, they are trying to push you away more.

I don't think AT&T is knowingly trying to push us away.  Autocross is one of the most misunderstood sports in existance.  The insurance companies don't understand what it's all about and I don't think this legal department does either.  Would they accept some kind of signed wavier saying we will not hold them liable for any damage to us or our cars instead of the POI?  This could be done along with the wavier we sign for our own insurance on site.  Some education about autocross for their legal begals might help too.  If my Cobra contacts a fixed object or goes upside down, I know the fix will come out of my pocket and not my insurance or a suit against the AT&T Center.  We need to make them understand that.

OK.  Here is where we stand right now.

We do have a signed 12 month contract.  But... Our insurance certificate
does not match exactly the example they provided us. This is because
autocross insurance does not include auto liablity.  The story right now
from AT&T legal is that we are OK with our strandard event insurance,
our standard waiver form, and having the POI for the drivers on file.

Alex is right about the size and inertia of the AT&T  legal department.  I
had been hoping to get the the POI requirement lifted, but no dice so far.

I do not think they are trying to get rid of us.  Marketing is happy. Legal
says they are happy with the POI and other legal instruments.  As long
as we don't upset Security or Facilities I think we can make this work.
This POI requirement is not a change. This has been the position of
AT&T legal since the beginning.   But we got a pass on it for the
first event due to short time between the contract signing and the
first event.

I have recieved about 8 POI images via email so far. Thanks.

So, if you have a full on race car that gets trailered in or a go cart and has no insurance they can't run? Also, State law requires proof of financial responsibility. Not necessarily insurance.

Just a quick question Ed.  Who all will have access to these POI's?  As you are well aware, most insurance companines are not very interested in insuring people who use their vehicles for competition.  Just wouldn't want my insurance folks to be able to associate my POI with a competitive event!

Thanks.

The best case is that your POI will only be on file with me, but I have to
provide it to the AT&T center if there is any legal claim made against
them by one of our drivers.  I am really pushing hard for this.

The other possibility is that it will be on file with me and with the AT&T legal
department. Again, they are only interested in using them in a defensive
manner if any claims are made against AT&T.

I am hopefull that I can get this requirement lifted in the future, but for
now they are holding us to it.  We came very very close to having to
cancel the last event over this issue, but due to the limited time between
the contract signing and the event, they gave us a pass on that event.
