One last update: This event has been rescheduled for October 4th.
If anyone has not been to one of these events, then you're in for a treat. These events are an absolute blast! The small course is roughly 1.6 miles long! And once or twice a year they will run the big course, almost 3 miles long, with the longest straight nearly one mile in itself!
The courses are very open run on the runways of the county airport. No trees, poles, curbs, parking stops, etc. to hit. There are a few large hay bales, but those are so far towards the inside of the track that you would have to have purposely hit them. They have also just recently started a program to make sure that all the grass clumps in between the concrete joints are sprayed and cleaned up on a regular basis. This is making for an very clean track surface.
I have been running these events since January and love every minute of it. To me it's well worth the drive for the amount of driving time. Which by the way, you normally run at least 2 - 30 minute practice sessions before running the timed laps. Sometimes there will be 3 or 4 practice sessions depending on the number of people registered.
And for those with significant others; the beach is 12 miles away, Mexico is about 20 miles. So there is lots to do other than to just sit at the track.
Rene Molina, the area director for RGV-PCA is a good friend of mine and also my father-n-law, who runs a 944 in PCA. If you cannot get ahold of Rene through the website (
www.rgvpca.org ) then email me and I'll get in touch with him.
The next event after the 4th will be on the 25th & 26th. This will be a 2-day event. Make plans to come down.
