A couple of questions:
1) How much money are we talking for the rally?
2) Can non-SASCA members join in the fun? I have a number of friends who would like to participate.

The rally will be open to all interested. We should start talking it up to area car clubs very soon.
This is up to the BOD, but I'd propose $15.00 for SASCA Members and $20.00 for non-members, per car. This is equivalent to other rallies offered throughout the area. I am still surprised -- but we have to provide insurance -- and most other car clubs don't.
Wil believes we can present 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies for all three categories. I'd like to present a gag gift for the participant that gets the most lost.
For those of you all that aren't experienced, plan to run the "Precision Driver" -or VOLUNTEER and learn how it's done plus get to see some scenery. If you can get a navigator, you can compete in the Intermediate Plan with no problem.
Several Car Clubs; Jaguar, Porsche, TCA and Viper all offer rallies throughout the year.
I think that answers most of the questions, feel free to post.

I just now noticed that both Houston and Austin are holding events.
That means that I'll adjust the rally to end much closer to San Antonio than anticipated.
Can I get comments from the congregation about an optional dinner after the awards ceremony? Do you all want to do it? It'd be something like a moderately-priced limited menu selection to help the staff and speed up service if we get a lot of participants. I've enjoyed Sprecht's a little nawth of the city, which has a patio as well as inside.
The reason I ask is that takes a lot of work ahead of time. So post your yeas or nays.
Everything is contingent upon approval from the BOD.
Thanks, Mike

This is a text synopsis of the Announcement Flyer....
The San Antonio Sports Car Association presents
OktoberFAST
Sunday, October 19, 2003 at a location to be provided later
Registration Closes: 12:30PM; First Car Leaves: 1:00PM; Rally Completes 5:00PM
at a location to be provided later
$15.00 for SASCA Members, $20.00 for area car club members.
Any car club that enters more than 10 cars will receive $5.00 off per entrant
Pre-register at DLBracing.com
Awards Ceremony followed by optional dinner.
1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Trophies to be awarded for three classes:
1.Experienced Driver/Navigator
2.Intermediate Driver/Navigator
3.Precision Driver/optional guest
Rules and Definitions
1.Experienced Driver/Navigator Team. Team will navigate a turn-by-turn course based on mileage, mph and time calculations (i.e. without a map).
0
Direction::Miles::MPH::Elapsed Time
1 right(N):: 20.0::
??
:: 00:35:00
2 right(E):: 5.7 ::
??
:: 00:06:00
3 Cont.(E)::
??
:: 35 :: 00:15:00
The team should be able to calculate needed MPH based on amount of time, as well as distance to travel at a specified speed. Be prepared to maintain two mileage and two timing sequences at once; one being the overall leg and one being a section. Scoring will be based on mileage (ie getting lost) and elapsed times per leg
2.Intermediate Drive/Navigator Team. Team will navigate a mapped course, solving clues within a specificied time period based on near speed limit pace (ie don't take too long)
Direction::ET for Leg: 1:30:00
Turn right (N) onto Starry Drive
1 Bob's Lane::
[Robert Street]
2 Sum of address for M. Jones::
[1+1+5+0+7= 14]
The team should solve puzzles while proceeding against a clock they are not fully aware of. All clues will be on passenger's side and within plain view. Scoring will based on correct number of clues, exceeded time limits will be penalized. We may offer a series of different value questions (1, 2 & 5 points). We may list more hints than can be possibly solved in the time allowed, allowing teams to select different strategies regarding scoring.
3.Precision Driver/optional guest. Designed for one driver or with a guest, a safer map of detailed driving instructions and speeds. A watch with second-hand sweep and odometer should be enough.
0 Direction
1 Turn right (N) onto Starry Drive. Speed Limit is 45Mph
2 Arrive at Robert Street in 13 Minutes.
3 Turn right (E). Speed Limits vary from 35 to 55 Mph.
Scoring will be based on elapsed time. I'll figure some sort of equalizer for one vs two people in a car (Maybe they'll have a maze somewhere to figure out).
4.We may have one or more “Bonus CheckPoints” identified by a small sign – any team that finds the checkpoint will receive a value-slip that either reduces time penalties, adds points to clues total, or gives them a “ win” and a bypass for the leg.
5.We may have hidden checkpoints to validate times.
6.Collusion other than the occasional hand signal between teams is discouraged. Deceptive tactics other than the occasional “wrong turn” is also discouraged. Any form of blatant cheating will result in forfeiture/disqualification by the team.
7.We will have a chase car, “safe areas” and will provide interim instructions throughout the event.
8.Current Driver's Licenses, Proof of Insurance and signed Insurance Waiver will be required.
Here's the actual flyer in Word format

Folks, as a courtesy to our BOD, I'd like to remind everyone that this event is still marked as "tentative." SASCA must provide some form of insurance for any event, competitive or not; and must review each official run for safety and profitability. Let's give them all the encouragement we can and understand that they have to make decisions that are best for the organization.

You have mentioned opening this event up to area clubs, is this still the case? I'm currently the Events person for Z-Sport, San Antonio's Z Car club and we have a few people that are interested in participating. Please let me know if this event is for sure going to happen so that I can let our members know. We normally participate in the Jaguar Rally in January and this would make a nice Fall event.

I would like to propose a different date for the event. Spokes is running thier first event at the Dell Diamond on the 19th so I know we won't get any of them out for the rally if it is on the same day. I imagine there are a number of Spokes folks that would like to participate in the rally.

We can go on the 26th, the BOD is reviewing everything and I'm waiting for the OK.
Any more delay could push it to 2004, because the TCA has a long-standing John Pappas Memorial Rally in November. If we do it a couple of weeks before, I'd guess that we'd get a good turnout of Corvettes that'll use the event for practice.
If the Austin SPOKES promise a good turnout, I'll put the start in San Marcos, and the finish on I-35. This would also help the Houston folks who wish to participate.

So what is going to be the finalized date for this event? The 19th or the 26th?

I am still waiting to hear from the BOD on if, and when, this is a go. SASCA has to provide insurance for any organized event, and thus all events must be voted on and made official (I guess). They have all the material. I will either recieve an email, or a Board Memeber may post on this thread.
In the event we don't get this off, the TCA has a rally planned for the following weekend (11/01) that has been a tradition for some years.
http://www.texas-corvette-association.org
I'm trying to get this in before their rally so we can attract some 10 to 20 vettes from both clubs....
So standy by....
